This is My Story
My name is Mike Downs (it says so on the header for this website), but there are a lot of us out there. When living in Toronto I used to get calls for a Mike Downes who was a local bassist and people would call wanting to me to play in their bands. Always wanting to be a rock star this would have been a dream come true, unfortunately I can’t carry a tune in a bucket.
So no I’m the Mike Downs living in Halifax Nova Scotia, I work for the government, am a father to 2 boys, husband to a newfoundland author.

I Went to Film School
After growing up in small town Ontario (with a side trip to BC) I ended up in Sheridan College in Oakville Ontario. I spent 3 years in Oakville, it was a great town and Sheridan is a good school but the film program (at the time) was really ‘independent film’ focused. I wanted to make commercial films and the instructors there really poo-poo’d that concept and really tried to break you of those dreams. In my case it worked.
The best part of my college experience was meeting my friends. We had (and continue to have) a great group of friends that I have continued to collaborate with on side projects some 20 years later.
The videos (to the left if you are not on mobile, probably below if you are on mobile) are for a couple student films we made for a spoof superhero we invented called Sekonic Man.
Toronto Bitches
I LOVE Toronto. Even more so now that I don’t live there. 🙂
I lived in the city for 10 years, mostly in the Danforth area of Toronto. Let me tell you, people can say that the big city is cold or difficult to meet people and I have to say that was not my experience at all. As soon as I moved to the area my roommate Wade and I found a local pub and started hanging out. Within a few weeks were on the dart league and I would spend the next 10 years in this part of the city a part of this community.
